Black is Back, and in a Big Way.
Perhaps it never left us completely, but for a while Black had taken a back seat to other colors. Blues, Reds, Greens- they seemed to be getting all the attention. But now that’s just so yesterday. Black has made a comeback of sorts, and it continues to define what’s classy and sophisticated. Yes, Black indeed has its “darker” side, but we’ll save that for Count Dracula or Black Beard. Let’s just say that when you want to show your elegant side, nothing dresses up a room with a modern twist more than Black curtains. Except maybe the chic, contrasting vibe of Black and White curtains! Looking for light filtering shades that keep a room darker and cooler during the summer? Then say “hello” to Black roller shades. Or how about room darkening window fashions for that home theater? Yes, blackout curtains is the correct answer. And Black is anything but basic. When paired with its opposite, White, Black snaps, crackles, and pops with exciting contrast. From stripes, to waves, to polka dots and more, Black offers a multitude of home décor options that promise to saturate a room with sophisticated elegance and class. From Black painted walls, to furniture, picture frames, Black-infused artwork, and yes, even bedding and barware, Black delivers an ambiance that exudes style. Forget Orange…because we say Black is the new Black! Black 1.0…Just the Facts on Blacks
As our darkest color, Black is the result of the absence of or complete absorption of light, and its origins date back to Paleolithic cave paintings some 18,000 years ago. Although commonly associated with darkness, evil, and witchcraft, for the ancient Egyptians Black had very positive associations. It was the color of the rich black soil flooded by the Nile. It was also the color of Anubis, the god of the underworld, who took the form of a black jackal and offered protection against evil to the dead. In 19th century fashion, Black surged in popularity, thanks in part to iconic French fashion designer Coco Chanel, who published a drawing of a simple black dress in Vogue magazine. She famously said, "A woman needs just three things; a black dress, a black sweater, and, on her arm, a man she loves.” As with all colors, Black can take the form of many shades, and when lightened it transforms into grey. To date, the blackest of all Black colors was recently discovered, when in 2008, researchers from Troy, New York's Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, announced the creation of the darkest material on the planet: Vantablack, made from carbon nanotubes. Vantablack absorbs a staggering 99.965% of radiation in the visible spectrum. Opposites Attract…and in Such a Wonderful Way!
Using Black as a design “canvas” opens up a wide world of fun choices when paired with White. From paisley wallpaper designs to bold geometric shapes and wall sculptures, Black and White make for a winning combination when you want to make a style statement. Add Black and White striped curtains or Black shutters to a white wall room and you’ve laid the base layer for something special. Aside from white, Black more than looks the part with other colors, including purple, lighter shades of grey, or darker reds, such as Cabernet. With a host of stylish accessories available, it’s easy to let your imagination design the room of your dreams. Lampshades, rugs, Black lacquer furniture and Black glass vases offer sophisticated options for layering Black into a room with new or existing furnishings. And who can forget Black velvet? This dressy, chic fabric allows a sofa or chair to score instant style points, and when partnered with Black and Gold or Black and Silver curtains, your room suddenly screams “over the top” gorgeous.
