A Common Question About Motorization

Over the past 30 years in the window coverings industry, I’ve had a lot of customers ask the same question: “Can you motorize what I already have?” (The answer is no, we can't).

What I haven’t heard — not once — is someone saying they regret buying Motorized Shades. And that’s because motorization isn’t just a luxury upgrade. It’s one of those things that’s genuinely useful every single day. It saves time, adds convenience, and yes… it feels a little fancy (in the best way).

Products That Can Be Motorized

One of the things I love about working for 3 Day Blinds is how many products we can motorize. Roman shades, roller shades, sheer horizontals, and honeycomb/cellular shades are all great candidates. We can even add Motorized Tilt to wood and faux wood blinds, which is relatively new to our program, and is a real game changer. People are loving it!

How I Use Motorization at Home

I have motorized shades in my own home, and I’m a big believer in automation. Mine go up in the morning to help me wake up, and they go down at night at a preset time so I don’t have to walk around the house closing everything when I’m ready for bed. It’s basically the modern version of living in Downton Abbey, and I’m not mad about it.

Voice Control and Everyday Convenience

I also use Siri all the time. My living room gets a lot of sun, and I always seem to notice it after I’ve laid down on the sofa. So instead of getting back up, I just say, “Siri, close living room shade,” and it’s handled.

Low-Maintenance Battery Life

And here’s the part people are surprised by: the batteries don’t need constant attention. Most setups only need a charge about every 9–12 months. Think “charge your phone” level of effort… except you’re doing it once or twice a year, not every night.

Why Motorization Makes Sense

Honestly, it’s hard for me to think of a situation where motorization doesn’t make sense. If you like convenience, if you have tall windows, if you want better light control, if you’re tired of cords, or if you just want your home to feel more effortless, motorized shades check all the boxes.
