Children and Window Cords Don't Mix

Tragically, nearly a dozen children die a year from window cord accidents. When window cords are within reach, it takes only a few seconds for a young child to be accidentally strangled. Infants placed in cribs near windows may be able to grasp a dangling window cord, unintentionally wrapping it around their neck. When toddlers and preschoolers play on beds or climb on furniture placed near windows, they can accidentally become entangled or caught in window cords. These may be the cords used to operate the blind or shade, or they may be cords that run inside or on the back of the product.

Free Child Safety Window Treatment Retrofit Kits From 3 Day Blinds

3 Day Blinds and Child Safety

Child safety is important to 3 Day Blinds. All products manufactured by 3 Day Blinds are in conformance with the current voluntary American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards for corded window covering products.

The Window Covering Safety Council recommends you only use cordless window products in young children's bedrooms and play areas. Owners and renters should replace all window coverings in the home made before 2001 with today's safer products.

However, if you wish to keep your older window coverings, 3 Day Blinds provides FREE Blind and Shade Retrofit Kits online. When properly installed these kits modify blind or shade cords and help reduce the risk of strangulation on window coverings made by any manufacturer and purchased before 2001.

Recommended Window Treatments – Safer for Children

When replacing window coverings, 3 Day Blinds recommends selecting cordless products. For assistance in selecting a product which fits your needs and is safer for your child, ask one of our in-home Design Consultants or call our Client Care Team 877-712-3329.

Window Covering Safety Tips

  • Replace all window coverings in the home made before 2001 with today's safer products.
  • Install only cordless window coverings in young children's bedrooms and sleeping areas.
  • Move all cribs, beds, furniture and toys away from windows and window cords, preferably to another wall.
  • Keep all window pull cords, inner lift cords and back cords out of the reach of children. Make sure:
    • Tasseled pull cords are always out of reach, whether the window treatment is raised or lowered.
    • Lock cords into position whenever horizontal blinds or shades are lowered, including when they come to rest on a windowsill.
    • Cord stops are properly installed and adjusted to limit movement of inner lift cords.
    • Wrap the pull cord around a cord cleat which is securely mounted to the wall when the blind or shade is not in use.
    • Continuous cord loops are permanently anchored to the floor or wall.
    • Never mount products with back cords, such as Roman and Woven Wood Shades, in windows accessible to children.
